ADAPTING 101

SUMMER WORKSHOP

Want to learn how to adapt a novel (or short story, comic book, magazine article, true story) into a screenplay?

Lots of novelists dream of their books being made into movies or limited series for today’s busy broadcast, cable, and streaming landscape. Or even shoot for the stars with seeing it on the big screen in movie theaters coast to coast. But how do you condense a 400 page behemoth full of nuance and detail into a strong, marketable 100 page (double spaced) screenplay that will land with buyers. Like anything, there are tactics and techniques for isolating the essentials and breathing new life into a cinematic medium that will resonate with audiences of all ages all over the world. Join us for this five week workshop where Michael shares his experience having adapted all of the above for authors, producers, networks, and studios, arming you with what you need to tame your beast.

SELLING 101

FALL WORKSHOP

Want to learn how the script business works?

How do you get an agent? How do you get in the guild? Do you need a manager? Answers to all these questions (and more) will be shared in this one day, two hour workshop giving you an insider’s view of navigating the competitive landscape of film and television commerce. You’ll learn how to protect your story’s rights and submit your material to competitions and fellowships that serve as springboards for the writers of tomorrow. The veil over agencies and management companies will be lifted so you know just how and where and who to submit your scripts to. Michael will share advice on how best to navigate option and purchase negotiations with attorneys on both sides of the aisle. What’s more, you’ll learn how to survive and succeed once your project is put into development, production, and distribution. Lastly, if not most importantly, you’ll learn how to get paid as a writer for services rendered and over the long term with residuals that last a lifetime.

I went from knowing nothing about screenwriting to having a full understanding. It’s like having a personal coach guide you to write what Steven Spielberg is looking for.
